New apartments in Jasper will have to wait half a year more before the development can progress.

Last Thursday’s deadline for MDMC Developments to submit a building permit for the Parcel GB development at 801/821 Connaught Drive passed by with a pause button pressed on the project.

“MDMC Development obtained a development permit extension from Parks Canada for Parcel GB development,” read a Parks Canada statement emailed to the Fitzhugh.

“The extension was granted on December 8, 2023, for the property located at 801/821 Connaught. It is not uncommon for a project of this size to require a permit extension. The developer is expected to obtain a Parks Canada Building Permit before the extension expires in June 2024.”

Jasper’s Murdock Bowen and Michael Young are among the partners in MDMC Development.

Parcel GB was released by Parks Canada for development for future affordable housing and purchased by the private developer. The leasehold for the 1.01-hectare lot was first put up for $6 million in late 2018.

In 2021, municipal council approved the installation of utility services to the GC, GB and GA parcels in conjunction with the construction of a 40-unit apartment building, a modular construction containing 32 one-bedroom and eight two-bedroom suites.

This project represents phase one for these to eventually host new affordable housing in the community. Water and sewer utility services were installed starting in August that year.

Excavators were on site in the first week of January 2023 to clear the trees and start the site preparation. Several concrete drainage pipe pieces have been stored on the site since late summer.
