This is a fast-paced and exciting role where the editor will handle the curation, editing, and coordination of news and marketing media for delivery across Great West Media’s network of community websites.

Great West Media, the premier source of news, advertising, and marketing in Alberta, is seeking a full-time central news desk editor. While this position is remote (work from home), the successful applicant must reside in Alberta. The position will remain open to applications until a suitable candidate is found.

This is a fast-paced and exciting role where the editor will handle the curation, editing, and coordination of news and marketing media for delivery across Great West Media’s network of community websites. Leveraging a background in journalism, outstanding editing skills, knowledge of SEO, and how to create engaging content, the editor ensures consistency and quality across all platforms.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee news content flow to various websites and maintain the Beyond Local section across the network.
  • Collaborate with newsrooms to select and share content from newspapers and other sources as directed.
  • Edit and proofread content from the central news desk for grammar, accuracy, and CP guideline adherence.
  • Develop localized versions of major stories for the readership.
  • Monitor and encourage updates to local polls to keep them engaging.
  • Guide messaging and delivery of newsletter content.
  • Create a content calendar with local editors for balanced news coverage.
  • Coordinate with news sections to ensure comprehensive reader experiences.
  • Prioritize breaking news and allocate resources in real time.
  • Enforce editorial standards and fact-check for accurate, credible reporting.
  • Provide writers with constructive feedback to improve digital storytelling.
  • Craft attention-grabbing, accurate headlines and enhance SEO with keywords and meta tags.
  • Monitor audience metrics and adjust strategies to boost engagement.
  • Respond to reader feedback to foster community interaction.
  • Stay informed on digital publishing trends to keep content innovative.
