Hundreds of young skiers from across northern Alberta came to Jasper to tear up snow and have a good time during the 43rd Jasper Junior Olympics last weekend.

Despite the chilly weather, Marmot Basin was packed with athletes, parents, volunteers and coaches, and Jasper the Bear even joined the fun to help keep the kids entertained.

Mady Mawson, 11, from Cold Lake described how she had practiced going over rollers and absorbing in order to prepare for her race on the upper course.

“This is my fourth year on the team and my fourth year doing this event,” Mawson said, noting how she planned on sticking with skiing.

Samantha Hornseth, 12, from Cold Lake said she did pretty good taking on the same course and had fun overall.

“I love to ski,” she said. “It feels like I’m flying kind of.”

The Jasper Junior Olympics is run through the Alberta North Zone Ski Racing Society, with the Race Organizing Committee composed of multiple clubs from across northern Alberta.
