BONNYVILLE – Bonnyville athlete Connor Woods brought home a national silver medal from the Canadian Indoor Track and Field Championships in Toronto. Woods competed in the U18 weight throwing competition and credits the hours of training and hard work.
This is Woods’ second national silver medal, having previously won silver in the U16 hammer last summer.
“It feels like a great accomplishment, especially since I can compete as a U18 with the 9 kg weight again next year,” said Woods.
The event took place from March 21 to 23 and included 829 registrants from 174 track clubs across Canada.
“It was a long event with lots of athletes competing from across Canada. The circle at York University was great to spin in, and being surrounded by the pole vault, track and long jump pit makes you feel like you are the main event,” said Woods.
Long hours
Woods was spending upwards of 10 hours a week training in preparation for the event and said that half of those hours were with Coach Larry Godziuk of the Lakeland Yellow Jackets. The other half were at Immortal Strength and Conditioning with Blake Adams.
When asked what advice he would give to aspiring athletes, Woods said, “Work hard because hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard.”
Woods said tryouts for Football Alberta are up next for him, followed by outdoor track and field training with the goal of qualifying for Legion Nationals in August.
