Work to live

Besides sleep, work is something we spend a significant amount of our time doing. Work is the engine that generates the resources that allow us to live and enjoy our lives.

Besides sleep, work is something we spend a significant amount of our time doing. Work is the engine that generates the resources that allow us to live and enjoy our lives. It is why we spend considerable time, resources and effort building our careers, making connections and forming partnerships. Many people come to Jasper looking to achieve a very specific kind of balance in our scenic environment.

When our jobs don’t flow, the result is significant stress. Some people are lucky enough to not experience this level of worry or concern, but those that do know just how devastating the effect can be on all other aspects of life. Stress can lead to depression, a dangerous mental state that can lead to unclear thinking and possibly even tragedy.

We don’t always get to choose our work environments, often they are assigned or we inherit them, yet conflicts resulting from association are common.

During the month of April the Fitzhugh will be exploring the different aspects and challenges of working in Jasper. “Making it Work” in Jasper can be a challenge, as some of our stories will illustrate, however there are also success stories and resources available that can help. We will profile different people in the community with different perspectives on living and working in Jasper. We will highlight different types of jobs or careers that locals perform everyday in our community.

For the amount of time people spend working, making wise career choices and knowing what resources are available is important, particularly in the unique setting of Jasper. Sometimes work challenges require that we make changes and knowing what is available or hearing about the stories of those who have gone before us can be very useful tools in making wise choices.

Finding the right job or career fit is the challenge we all face. If we are not happy with our work, we end up being unhappy in general.

Everyone has a right to happiness and to enjoy all aspects of their lives, including what they do for a living. As difficult as a career change can be, it can sometimes be the only option to ensure continued healthy living. However both locals and those seeking to start a new life in our community need to know how to make it work.
