Two suspects have been arrested after fleeing from police in a stolen vehicle, which resulted in a police search in Jasper National Park on Friday (Jan. 3).

Earlier in the day, police received a report from a member of the public that their credit card had been stolen and unauthorized transactions were being made within the Jasper townsite.

Through an investigation, police obtained a description of the two suspects. Shortly after, officers located the suspects in a stolen vehicle, but when police attempted to approach, the suspects fled the scene.

According to RCMP, a containment strategy was immediately enacted in the surround area, which briefly closed Maligne Lake Road. During this time, they discovered a second vehicle had also been stolen.

After a thorough search, police located and arrested one male and one female, who were not named in the release.

The two individuals have been charged with multiple offences, including theft of a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime, dangerous driving, flight from a peace officer and breach of conditions.

“Jasper RCMP would like to thank Parks Canada, the Municipality of Jasper, local Emergency Services and the public for their assistance and patience during this incident,” RCMP stated in a news release.

No further information is available as the accused have yet to appear in court for a bail hearing. Police say an update is expected at a later date.
