An ice fishing structure broke through the ice in the area of Chain Lakes Reservoir on March 9.

Nanton RCMP are warning the public about the dangers of thin ice after responding to reports of people on the ice in the area of Chain Lakes Reservoir on March 9.

RCMP learned that an ice fishing structure had broken through the lake ice and a vehicle with several people on the same section of ice were attempting to rectify the situation.

Nanton RCMP are reminding the public that entry onto lake ice at this time of year could be potentially dangerous and checking ice conditions is recommended.

RCMP say with warmer temperatures at this time of year it is extremely important to consider the safety risks. Police say if you’re going out on the ice, ensure you are checking on the ice depth, tell someone you will be there in case you do not come back as scheduled, and to be aware of aerated lakes and local fishing information.

RCMP say safety gear such as ice picks, flotation devices and warm, identifiable gear should be worn to protect you, make you easier to find and to help keep you safe if failure in the ice results during your activities.

Police say venturing out onto the ice not only poses a risk to yourself, but also an unnecessary risk to first responders that might need to be called in for a rescue.
