Jasper Municipal Library is a hub for the community. Its services go far beyond the offer of physical books for enjoyment or study. Its users range from toddlers to seniors, long-established locals to Jasper National Park’s day-use tourists—people from all walks of life. That is the beauty of any library; it welcomes all ages. Jasper’s library is no different and it delivers.
Jasper Municipal Library has over 18,000 items in its collection. You can find non-fiction and fiction books in English and French. The library has also small collections of (mainly) children’s books in various international and Indigenous languages. The physical collection includes DVDs, music CDs, audiobooks, magazines and a daily newspaper for its members to both borrow or read in our magnificent and bright building. We recently added a great selection of adult puzzles and boardgames for local check-out. Very popular with younger visitors is our children’s section where they are greeted by our (stuffy) library cat and next to a varied assortment of children books, visitors can help themselves to toys and games. There are always colouring sheets out for fun. If library members cannot find the items they are looking for in this library, Jasper Municipal Library is part of the bigger Yellowhead Regional Library and the Alberta Library network and so they can request books from almost any library in Alberta.
Many folks from town, and visitors from around the world, use the three public computers and two printers (black/white and colour) available to the public. The photocopier and fax machine also provide much needed services.
Perhaps even more exciting is the programming put on for the community. The library hosts ongoing programs from fall to spring including Saturday Storytime in the morning, Let-Them-Play parent and child get-together on Tuesday morning for our youngest patrons, a Tween Program on Tuesday afternoon (Grade 4 and older) and a senior’s program “From the Stacks” on the first and third Thursday of the month.
Complementing these ongoing events, are special events such as open mics or speaker series’ covering topics from gardening to creative writing to talks about social issues to information about Jasper’s natural environment. An annual tradition that is a favorite for the young enthusiastic readers will be on the menu again in the summertime: Summer Reading Club. Details to all these events can be found on posters around town, in the newspaper, on social media and on the library’s website.
The Jasper Municipal Library partners with many other organisations such as Habitat for Arts, the Jasper Local Food Society, the Municipality of Jasper and local businesses to create interesting experiences for all ages.
Opening times of the library are Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday and on statutory holidays the library is closed.
