Obituary for Eilir Merion Thomas

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Eilir Merion Thomas, a cherished husband and father, who peacefully departed this life on September 23rd, 2024, in Jasper, Alberta, Canada, at the age of 90.

Eilir was born on June 4th, 1934, in Bala, Gwynedd, North Wales, to Arthur Owen Jones Thomas and Margaret Ann Thomas (née Parry). He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 66 years, Ceridwen (Ceri) Rees Thomas, and his sisters Elizabeth Edwina Jones Owen and Hazel Mary Gwawr Bowman.

Eilir graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in History from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. After teaching in London, he took a position in Nantwich, Cheshire. Inspired by his great uncle’s adventures in North America and his father’s fond views of Canada, Eilir accepted a teaching role in Valleyview, Alberta in 1967, which led to countless family adventures. He taught in Valleyview and later served as Principal of South-Central High School in Oyen, Alberta, from 1969 to 1976. Eilir then undertook a Master of Arts in History at the University of Alberta before taking an administrative role at Jasper Jr. Sr. High School. He often reminisced about his students and proudly heard from many who credited him with shaping their lives.

Eilir was a champion of justice, admired by some and seen as a rebel by others. He was an avid reader, a poet and a gifted storyteller, known for his kindness and generosity. He possessed a deep philosophical insight, combined with a pragmatic and logical approach to life, engaging with people from all walks of life with respect. A proud Welshman and fluent Welsh speaker, Eilir enjoyed long walks around Lake Edith and cherished his family.

Eilir is survived by his brother, Owain Llŷr Thomas; brother-in-law, Laurie Bowman; daughters Hâf Ballie (Nick) and Nia Thomas (Dean Whalen); sons Siôn Thomas, Dafydd Thomas (Wendy), Ifan Thomas, and Owain Thomas; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who will carry on his legacy.

In accordance with Eilir’s wishes, the family will hold a private memorial in Jasper, Alberta.  The place he loved most.
