A pair of women stand with one foot suspended over the crosswalk at Miette Avenue and Connaught Drive, turned into a technicolor marvel by Bob Bush Contracting on May 27.
“Can we walk on it? Is it ready?”
Cameras out, fists in the air, thumbs up, smiles everywhere. Even the contractors had their phones going.
You wouldn’t think a rainbow crosswalk 50 feet across would need a herald trumpeting its long-awaited birth to passerby. You wouldn’t know OUT Jasper executive director Mychol Ormandy.
“It feels great,” he said standing on the freshly dry paint on Monday afternoon. “It was a long time coming and my heart is full of joy that we’ve finally got the rainbow crosswalk.
“It’s exactly what I wanted.”
Other OUT Jasper board members like Vanessa Hugie, who runs the Whistlers Inn, which overlooks the crosswalk, stopped in to check out the new paint job and congratulate Ormandy Board member Jessica Daniels sat and watched the entire project come to life.
“It’s good to know there are lots of positive thoughts about it,” she said. “It was a long, emotional process for OUT to finally get the rainbow crosswalk. We’re excited to take photos and share them.”
Ormandy is already ready to put down more, once the about $5,000 cost is raised.”
Where?
“I don’t know. Wherever they allow us.”
