Jasper mayor Richard Ireland has discouraged visitation to the mountain town in a new video message.

“Right now, Jasper simply cannot welcome you or care for you as we normally would,” Ireland said in the online clip.

The two-minute message was released on the Municipality of Jasper’s YouTube channel on Friday, Dec. 11, when there were 62 active cases of COVID-19 in the municipality.

With 62 active cases, Jasper’s case rate was 1,104 per 100,000 population, the third highest in the province behind Calgary Upper NE and Kananaskis Improvement District.

There were also active COVID-19 outbreaks at Seton - Jasper Healthcare Centre and Alpine Summit Seniors Lodge.

“If you are considering a visit to Jasper, please consider this,” Ireland said.

“Our little hospital has limited capacity and has already suffered an outbreak of COVID-19.

“Non-COVID patients can be treated in the emergency room but can’t be admitted.

“Hospital capacity regionally and provincially is also stressed.”

“If you consider postponing your visit until a safer time, I assure you, Jasper will still be here, ready and much more able to welcome you and to care for you.”

Ireland cited new public health measures that came into effect in the province on Dec. 8 and 13, including the discouragement of out-of-town travel, the closure of restaurants, bars and lounges to in-person dining, and the ban on social gatherings.

“That includes in hotel rooms and in parking lots,” Ireland said.

He said the Municipality appreciated the premier supporting the tourism industry by keeping ski hills and hotels open, noting the importance of outdoor recreation “particularly during this stressful time”.

“We also appreciate the very difficult decisions facing our local businesses and all Albertans,” he said.

But with winter road conditions currently on mountain roads and the increased risk of injury that comes with outdoor activities, especially in the mountains, “we encourage you to play it safe”.

“Consider your choices carefully,” Ireland said.
