A library secret that everyone should know about: eResources!

The purpose of a library, and one of our goals here at the Jasper Municipal Library, is to help you answer questions—what new books have been released, are there resources to help with changes in my life, or can you help me with a research project? Books are definitely the well trusted go-to for answering these, and many more, questions, but in the Google Era are they still relevant? We believe a combination of both, internet and books, is the answer. The library stays on top of things by offering more refined electronic search options and study menus on our webpage that will help you to find deeper answers to your questions.

So what do I do?

Sit down at the computer and visit our brand-new webpage at https://jasperlibrary.ab.ca/. You will find the link to the eResources at the upper right corner that will open a whole list of excellent electronic resources.

To get a quick overview of what is available, visit first the Niche Academy (https://my.nicheacademy.com/yrl) and watch the short tutorial videos for every item on the list: From Access to Genealogical Records of Billions, to eBooks, audiobooks, and a World Book (a digital encyclopedia). Our most popular trio are the apps Libby, cloudLibrary and hoopla that give you access to thousands of free ebooks or audiobooks to read or listen to on your device. The TumbleBook Library has its fans as it is designed to provide free access to picture books, videos, or games for children. A lot of adults check out the Consumer Reports link for unbiased product reviews before they go shopping. Others sit down to read newspapers and magazines from all over the world with Press Reader. Cypress Resume lets you create professional profiles to help you land job interviews while LinkedIn learning offers courses that expand your professional horizon. You can learn how to use a computer (Computer Basics) as well as a new language (Pronunciator). It is all at your fingertips using the eResources at our webpage. And it is all for free.

The only thing you will need is your library card with its barcode and your password (contact the library if you don’t know your password). Be aware, all of these services will have you signing into your library account—you will need the card!

While we are speaking of your account, there is also the TracPac app to download on your device. It provides a catalogue of all items in The Yellowhead Regional Library System (YRL) with its 180 libraries across Alberta and it is where you can manage your account, including book renewals and holds on new books. Available any time, anywhere.

We still want to see you in the library in person. Come for our live events such as the “Tween Take Over” for Grade 4 to 7 tweenagers, or the “From the Stacks” program for our seniors, and “Storytime” our Saturday morning event for our youngest patrons and their parents. Or just to say hi to our friendly staff.
