RED DEER COUNTY – The RCMP Name the Puppy Contest is back for another year.

The contest kicked off Wednesday, Feb. 19 and runs until March 19, 2025

This RCMP initiative aims to involve the younger population of Canada to welcome the next generation of police dogs to the RCMP.

German shepherd puppies are born at the RCMP’s Police Dog Service Training Centre (PDSTC), located southeast of Innisfail in Red Deer County each year.

The contest by the PDSTC invites kids from across Canada, between the ages of four and 14, to submit name suggestions.

This year, participants are asked to submit names starting with the letter A.

In a media release, the RCMP is emphasizing that the contest rules are simple:

•    Submissions must be made using the online form;

•    Each participant can submit up to one unique name (one entry per person);

•    Only kids between the ages of four to 14 may enter;

•    The name must start with the letter A;

•    The name must be one or two syllables;

•    The name must have no more than nine letters;

•    Contestants must live in Canada;

•    All entries must be received by Monday, March 19, 2025;

•    Kids should always get a parent or guardian's permission before submitting personal information such as their name or phone number to any website;

Contest winners and the winning names will be announced on Thursday, April 17 on the RCMP website and social media platforms.

Each winner from every province and territory will receive a laminated eight by 10-inch photo of the puppy they name; a plush dog named Justice and an RCMP water bottle.

After entering the contest online, entrants will be invited to submit artwork that will be shared with the PDSTC.

The artwork may be showcased on the RCMP’s social media with the first name and province or territory.
