Moving into a new home and starting a new chapter in your life can be really exciting; but, it can also be stressful if you’ve never moved before. Here are some of the things you have to do before moving into a new home.
1. Organizing
When you’re packing up your old home, try to be as organized as possible. This means putting things together that you want to stay together in your new home, like putting all your dishes in the same box. Doing this will help prevent you from having to look through every box for one thing later on. Similarly, make sure you label every box with descriptions of what’s inside with as much detail as you reasonably can. Instead of simply labelling a box “kitchen” you could write “kitchen – cutlery”. You may only need certain things in your new home for the first few days, so if you can read exactly what’s in each box, you won’t need to go searching for it.
2. Deep clean
Before you move in, it’s easiest to start by giving your new home a good, deep clean. Cleaning once you start moving things in will be much harder, so thoroughly clean out things like closets and cupboards before unpacking. In a similar notion, if you bought a house from someone rather than buying it new, changing the toilet seats is a good idea. This will give you peace of mind that you and your family are all in a clean environment. Even if the house is new, installing a detachable toilet seat would be beneficial. Being able to remove your toilet seat completely will make cleaning it later on much easier. The same goes for any old mattresses, opt for new ones. These days you don’t even need to spend long amounts of time with mattress moving companies. Just order one online and wait for your bed in a box mattress to arrive home!
3. Change locks
While the cleanliness of your house is important, the safety of it is even more so. To keep your home safe, change the locks. You don’t know who has keys to your current lock and changing it can help prevent a break-in. Another safety component you need to check in your home is whether there are any smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. If there is ever a fire or a gas leak, you want to know as soon as possible. Check your smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they work and all have new batteries. If your home doesn’t already have them, you can get new ones at any home improvement store.
4. Change your address
Lastly, don’t forget to change your address as soon as you can. This includes changing your address on government documents like your license and passport, but also things like your credit card bill, your utilities and even subscription services. Not getting your mail in your new home can be annoying at the very least, but can be a privacy issue as well. You don’t want the new tenants in your home to have any private information about you, so change your address ASAP!
