A wildfire between Hinton and Edson that was caused by a pipeline rupture on Tuesday is now under control.

TC Energy confirmed Tuesday that a rupture occurred on a segment of its NGTL natural gas pipeline system.

“We are working closely with first responders in the region, including RCMP, Yellowhead County and Alberta Wildfire,” TC Energy said in a statement.

“An initial ignition of natural gas at the rupture site is now extinguished. We are working to support Alberta Wildfire in their response to contain a secondary fire.”

The affected section of the pipeline has since been isolated and shut down.

TC Energy added that there were no injuries, the remainder of its system was operating normally and there were no commercial impacts at this time.

Fire crews will be concentrating on dealing with any hotspots on Wednesday.

This wildfire in Yellowhead County does not pose a threat to any community and remains under investigation.

The blaze was initially estimated to be 10 hectares in size but is now estimated to be 60 hectares.

"The size increase is not due to wildfire activity. Forest officers had improved access to the wildfire today and were able to get more accurate measurements of the burnt perimeter," Alberta Wildfire stated in a Wednesday update.

The fire is located 28 kilometres northeast of Obed Lake, or 35 kilometres northwest of Edson and 55 kilometres northeast of Hinton.

A fire advisory remains in effect for the Edson Forest Area.
