Environment Canada is warning thunderstorms will develop for Hinton on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 4).

The thunderstorms may become severe and produce very large hail, strong wind gusts and torrential rain, according to Environment Canada.

Thunderstorms are forecasted to move toward the east or southeast through the evening before weakening overnight.

Hinton is expected to receive five to 10 millimetres of rain.

Environment Canada noted large hail can damage property and cause injury.

Strong wind gusts, it added, can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles.

“Be prepared for severe weather. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors,” said the federal weather agency.

It also warned severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes, and heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.

A severe thunderstorm watch is issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for developing thunderstorms that could produce large hail, damaging winds and/or torrential rainfall.

Jasper is forecasted to receive showers with thunderstorms, although a severe thunderstorm watch was not issued for this area.

Environment Canada encouraged the public to continue monitoring alerts and forecasts.
