Editorial: Homely holidays

This year, ‘home for the holidays’ has a slightly different meaning. Due to public health restrictions, we will be holding festivities with only our households, missing family gatherings and reunions with friends.

This year, ‘home for the holidays’ has a slightly different meaning.

Due to public health restrictions, we will be holding festivities with only our households, missing family gatherings and reunions with friends.

Our holidays will be quieter and more intimate, but we have lived nearly 10 months in this new normal - we know our responsibilities and have learned how to stay connected, apart.

This is a tough holiday season for many people, but if we can get through this one, there is hope for next year.

The holiday season is a time for giving and caring - and that is something that hasn’t changed this year. In fact, the spirit of kindness and generosity seems to be stronger than ever.

In Jasper, the community has been positively vivacious in its support for local businesses and causes.

Our thoughts have been with healthcare and other frontline workers this year - especially now, as they continue to care for us through this second wave of the virus, through the holidays, and going forwards.

I encourage you to show your gratitude this holiday season, give generously where you can, and stay connected with those you love.

And if you are struggling, remember, you are not alone. Support is available.

Reach out to a friend or family member, talk to an Outreach Worker at 780-852-2100 Monday to Friday 9am-4:30pm (closed Dec. 24-28 and Jan. 1), or call a provincial helpline. These two are always open:

Mental Health Helpline - 1-877-303-2642

Addiction Helpline - 1-866-332-2322

Stay safe, be happy and healthy, and have a wonderful holiday.
