On Thursday, Nov. 3, 2005, the Jasper Fitzhugh published its first issue.
We’ve now reached our 18th anniversary and wanted to extend a big thank-you to the community and all the businesses that have supported local news over the years.
The history of newsprint in Jasper dates back to almost a century ago.
In 1927, the Jasper Signal began to provide much-needed local news to the small railway town tucked in the middle of the Rocky Mountains, but the paper folded during its first year.
A variety of other papers followed, with the Jasper Booster having the longest run out of any of them with a 46-year tenure.
In 2005, the Fitzhugh came out as a photo-heavy, colourful, younger alternative to the Booster.
The Fitzhugh was started by five local business owners who wanted to offer Jasperites an independent, locally-owned newspaper.
In 2012, the paper sold to Aberdeen Publishing Inc., a small umbrella company that oversees multiple community newspapers throughout British Columbia and Alberta.
Over nearly two decades, the Fitzhugh has striven to tell the stories of residents and keep them informed about local matters.
Our weekly newspaper is provided for free and is available on racks throughout town.
