While many visitors and family members to the Westlock Meditation Centre are still recovering from a tragic tent collapse July 31, that took the life of one person, a spokeperson there said in light of the tragic event, they have “adjusted the schedule” for an 11-day annual meditation event that was expected to begin Aug. 1.
“For now, it’s being paused,” said a spokesperson for the centre. “We are waiting for the authorities to tell us and give us a report and we’ll proceed from there. As of right now, the retreat event is on pause.”
Although for many, the week has been a very sad and difficult time, those staying at the centre and their families are slowly healing, with support from friends, family and the Westlock Meditation Centre staff.
“They’re holding up,” said the spokesperson. “We have contacted the family members of the ones who have been injured and we informed them about the procedures for (taking) care, as we also have our own medical team on site to help and take care and continue ongoing care for those who are injured, who will soon be discharged.
“There are some still in hospital being checked by doctors and nurses.”
At the time of the collapse, the spokesperson said there were “under 100 people” under the tent, with some around it and beside the tent entrance. He also noted the centre’s next steps over the coming days.
“We are discussing amongst the organizing team as (to) what to do next, and we’re still doing some other activities, what we can within the vicinity that we have, and that’s available.”
Westlock County officials responded to the tent collapse at the Westlock Meditation Centre, addressing the community and press via a statement on Aug. 1, with “deep sorrow”, following the incident that took the life of one individual and injured dozens of others.
Reeve Christine Wiese said they are saddened and mourning the tragic event, saying their “hearts go out to the families and friends affected by this unfortunate event.”
“We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the individual who lost their life. We also offer our heartfelt support to those who are recovering from injuries and to their loved ones who are providing them care and comfort,” said Wiese in the statement. “To the residents of Westlock County, and especially to the owner and staff of the Westlock Meditation Centre, we share in your grief and sorrow. This incident has deeply impacted our community, and we stand together in mourning and support.”
She applauded the efforts of emergency responders, who were quick to arrive on the scene and provide immediate assistance.
“We commend the Emergency Medical Services, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), and all the firefighters from Busby, Pickardville, Clyde and Town of Westlock for their prompt and professional actions during this difficult time,” said Wiese. “Your dedication and swift response are greatly appreciated and have been a beacon of hope and care amid the tragedy.”
Wiese asked for patience and respect for privacy of those affected as they “navigate through this challenging time together.”
RCMP and Occupational Health and Safety are continuing their investigation into the incident.
