The preliminary hearing for an Alberta senior charged in the shooting of a teenager has been rescheduled, following an adjournment earlier last month.
James Bregin is charged with aggravated assault, using a firearm in the commission of an offence, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and intentional reckless discharge of a firearm. He is currently out on bail.
Bregin was charged in the shooting of a 16-year-old who was trespassing on his property on the outskirts of St. Albert on June 29, 2024. The teen suffered serious injuries.
Bregin's initial preliminary hearing was originally scheduled to take place over two days on Jan. 23 and 24, 2025. After an adjournment, the matter appeared in court over subsequent weeks for rescheduling.
Following an appearance on Feb. 24, Bregin's two-day preliminary hearing is now scheduled to take place on Sept. 4 and 5, 2025 at the St. Albert Court of Justice. The purpose of a preliminary hearing is to determine if there is enough evidence to take the case to trial.
In 2024, the Gazette reported Bregin's neighbours said he was concerned about people trespassing on his property to steal parts from hundreds of junked vehicles he stored on his property.
