A woman is in critical condition after police believe she was struck by two vehicles while walking along Highway 28 near Casino Dene south of Cold Lake early on the morning of Dec. 18.
Cst. Corey Riggs, public information officer for Alberta RCMP, said the woman appears to have been first struck by the mirror of one vehicle and then hit by a second vehicle.
RCMP officers received the call at 5:35 a.m., and the highway was closed for a couple hours as they investigated the scene. The road reopened around 7:36 a.m., Riggs noted.
The victim, a 29-year-old woman from the Elizabeth Métis Settlement, remains in critical condition.
Riggs said it is too early to determine if charges would be laid.
“It’s still under investigation, so it might be a while before we find out if any charges will be applicable or not.”
Riggs added that impairment was ruled out for the individuals involved in the vehicles.
He assured the public that updates will be provided if charges are laid.
No further details are available at this time as the investigation continues.
