WESTLOCK – An Athabasca County man accused of injuring an RCMP officer as he fled from a traffic stop has been granted bail in Westlock Court of Justice on Oct. 30.
Glen Morin, 62, appeared by telephone from the Athabasca RCMP Detachment where he was being held following his arrest. His Edmonton defence lawyer Evan McIntyre appeared by CCTV.
Crown Prosecutor Eric Mosley had opposed Morin’s release. The burden, however, was on the Crown to prove that detention was necessary.
Justice R. M. Saccomani granted Morin a $2,000 cash bail and released him on strict conditions including a curfew from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. He was ordered not to have any alcohol in his home, not to possess any weapons, and not to leave Alberta without permission.
His case was adjourned to Nov. 25 in Athabasca Court of Justice.
Morin is charged with dangerous driving causing bodily harm, flight from a police officer, fail/refuse to provide a breath sample, failing to stop after an accident causing bodily harm, and aggravated assault of a police officer.
Morin was arrested after an incident where he allegedly fled from Athabasca RCMP during a traffic stop on Oct. 25. According to police, they had initiated a traffic stop of a White Ford 150 following a suspicious vehicle complaint. The male driver, who police say appeared impaired during the traffic stop, refused to provide identification.
Officers noticed a hunting rifle in between the male driver and the male passenger in the front seat of the pickup truck. The driver fled when the officer had tried to arrest him and the officer was injured in the incident.
RCMP released a sketch of the suspect and passenger of the truck, asking the public to report sightings of the truck or the suspects.
The charges against Morin haven't been tested in court.
