The most awarded craft distillery in Canada continues to make waves internationally.
Turner Valley’s Eau Claire Distillery picked up gold and silver medals at the 2024 World Whiskies Awards, it was announced following the Whisky Magazine Awards gala on March 20.
"I am very proud to see Eau Claire Distillery making their mark on the global stage through their incredible success at the 2024 World Whiskies Awards,” said RJ Sigurdson, Highwood MLA and minister of agriculture and irrigation, in a release.
“This accomplishment truly reflects the dedication and world-class skill of Alberta’s distillers, and the high quality of Alberta grains.”
Eau Claire took home the gold in Canada’s single malt category for its Single Malt Whisky Batch No. 7 and silver in the Canadian Blended category for its Rupert’s Exceptional Canadian Whisky.
According to Eau Claire’s website, the Batch No. 7 whisky is aged separately in Hungarian Oak, French Oak and American Oak barrels and has a red fruit, brown sugar, green apple and white pepper taste.
Eau Claire has produced whisky since 2013 and has been racking up awards ever since.
In 2023 alone, Eau Claire’s whisky was awarded with double gold at both the San Francisco World Spirits and New York International Spirits Competition and three gold medals at the Sip Awards.
In addition to Eau Claire, there was a total of 10 awards won by Alberta-based distilleries at the global awards with Anohka, Alberta Premium and Black Velvet taking home hardware.
A press release from the Government of Alberta cited the economic importance of its distilleries, adding that in the 2022-23 fiscal year wholesale sales of Alberta spirits within the province totalled over $160 million.
