Waterton Lakes National Park had to temporarily close its gates and turn visitors away after reaching capacity on Aug. 6.
“We will limit traffic access into the park where and when needed this season to provide the safest possible experience for our visitors, wildlife and staff,” said Parks Canada in a news release.
“We are monitoring and reviewing this process and will make adjustments as necessary.”
The park reopened after several hours, however it’s the first time the park has ever had to close due to traffic congestion.
According to local media reports, staff members directed vehicles away from the park’s entrance gate and were not allowing vehicles to form a line along the highways. Visitors with existing reservations were permitted to access the park.
Early numbers indicate that it was the third busiest day on record.
