Ninety-five per cent of Wildrose and Progressive Conservative voters decided to put aside their differences and join forces as the United Conservative Party (UCP) on July 22.
The vote ratified an agreement reached on May 18 to unite the Wildrose and PC party under one banner ahead of the next provincial election slated for May 31, 2019.
Wildrose leader Brian Jean announced he will be running to lead the new party after Wildrose officials announced the results of the unity vote.
Jason Kenney, leader of the Progressive Conservatives and former cabinet minister for Prime Minister Stephen Harper, has yet to announce his intentions, however he is widely expected to run in the leadership race.
In the meantime Wildrose MLA Nathan Cooper has been chosen to serve as interim leader of the new party until a permanent leader is elected on Oct. 28.
