Volunteers cleared a lot more brush than trash at Patricia Lake during a combined High 5 Trail Day and the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup day July 25.

Loni Klettl, Ben Nearingburg and Lloyd Sommers cleared sightlines along 100 metres of a trail on the west side of the lake leading to a picnic area, while Karen Huculak and others picked what little trash, mostly cigarette butts, she could find along the near-pristine shoreline of the lake.

In all seven kilograms of trash was taken out, including 262 butts, found along four kilometres of shoreline.

“This was such a fantastic combo, it needs a repeat performance; our next one will be at Moab Lake and clearing the trail down to it,” Klettl said on Facebook later in the day.

Nearly four million kilograms of trash has been removed from Canadian shorelines since 2003.
