In support of overnight accommodation at Maligne Lake

Dear Editor,

With reference to this week’s Fitzhugh front page headline and page 3 article “Malgine (sic) development before the courts”.

At issue is whether or not the development proposal is completely contrary to the management planning scheme that exists. It is to be noted that former Park Superintendent Greg Fenton made his decision contingent on the subsequent amendment of the management plan. He is to be commended for attempting to be as fair as possible to both CPAWS and Maligne Tours.

There is a fundamental error involved. Maligne Tours’ proposal is to construct a 66 room Lodge on their present property. It is not a development proposal—it is an application to upgrade their facilities and, in my view, it is no different than what has been done here recently. Our new high school; the library; the Crimson, for examples.

It is to be remembered that when the original Maligne Lake buildings were built, the plans included facilities which would accommodate rather elaborate overnight accommodations.

After reading the Maligne Lake proposal, I think that the idea of a 66 room Lodge at Maligne Lake is a great idea. The presence of a maximum of 132 visitors staying overnight at the beautiful, world-famous location is not going to bother the caribou, elk, bears and so on. Let us remember our seniors as they enter their golden years. What a great place for them to visit in the solitude, fresh air and enjoy the natural beauty of the Rocky Mountains. By the way, the lodge would only be open about five months each year and operated by people who have proven themselves, again and again, as environmentally friendly.
