Parks Canada has set up a closure near Old Fort Point after a female grizzly and her two year-old cubs were seen feeding on an ungulate carcass in the area.
The closure is in an area just north and northwest of Old Fort Point and does not restrict public access to Trail 7 north of the parking lot, however accessing the Athabasca River west from this trail will not be permitted until further notice.
This is the second closure due to grizzly bear activity this month.
On July 7 Parks Canada closed the northwest loop of Opal Hills after a grizzly bear and her cub were spotted in the area.
The main trail and south alpine ridge remain open to the public. To minimize the potential of a bear encounter Parks Canada recommends travelling in groups of four or more, watch for bears, make noise to alert the bear of your presence and carry bear spray.
Bear sightings should be reported to the Jasper National Park resource conservation officer at 780-852-6155.
