Welcome to your Jasper Seniors Society News column, which appears every two weeks courtesy of the Jasper Fitzhugh.

Our Spring Dinner is now scheduled for Monday, April 22, with entertainment confirmed at the Activity Centre Hall.

Cost will be just $25 for Dinner and a Show – concert by Dahlia Wakefield. Doors open at 5 p.m. and dinner is at 5:30 p.m.

If you have missed our deadline and wish to attend, please email to [email protected].

Fred Kreiner will be at the dinner to issue new and renew memberships at $10 per year to receive newsletters, invitations to events and more! A group of Whitecourt seniors will enjoy the evening with us.

We wish to thank Glenda the Great Catering for spoiling our seniors with delicious and reasonably priced dinners for many years.

Our Society met this Monday, and we had a presentation from Megan Verhey representing Verhey Friendly Visiting. Megan runs a social program for seniors and the Executive is pleased to extend the use of our Seniors’ Lounge to Megan for May and June. The dates you can participate in May are Tuesdays 8 a.m. to noon, Thursdays and Sundays 1 to 4 p.m. Please email to Megan at [email protected].

It was decided that our Seniors Society make a generous contribution to the Alpine Summit Seniors Lodge for the purchase of portable air conditioning units for any rooms currently without air conditioning. This is a vulnerable sector of our community and your Executive felt this was a much-needed donation. We wish to thank Ornesto Tassoni for his help in effecting and placing these units in the Lodge in May.

There will also be a community barbecue at the Lodge on Saturday, June 1st, from noon to 3 p.m. by way of a fundraiser for the new generator needed for the Lodge. Everyone is welcome. Please look for more information in The Fitzhugh for this event.

Also, if you wish to be prepared for the wildfire season you can pick up a FireSmart booklet at the Activity Centre. You can see the display next to Glenda the Great’s concession which features a 72-hour kit recommended if evacuation is needed.

Don't miss the Coffee Hour at the Alpine Summit Lodge happening Friday, April 19, at 10:45 a.m. about the Otto Brothers courtesy of the Jasper Yellowhead Museum & Archives.

The Showcase Gallery continues to host "From the Wilds of Jasper," which is a combination art/photography exhibit by Wes and Johane. This exhibit is a MUST SEE so if you have not had a chance to stop by yet to check it out, please do so!

The Alcove Gallery is now displaying a "One Room Schoolhouse" exhibit. Take a walk back in time and see what it was like to attend a one room school. This exhibit runs until the end of May. The Museum is open Thursdays through Sundays.

A reminder that the Museum welcomes all refundables given to Sheila’s Bottle Bin. Thank you!

Support the Society that supports you! Please choose Jasper Seniors Society as the donation recipient at TGP.

Anyone over 55 years of age can join the Society for a nominal $10 annual fee and receive newsletters and invitations to outings and functions throughout the year. The objectives of the Society, in part, are to promote the interests of seniors as well as to coordinate the services available to seniors in the community. The Society manages and maintains a Seniors’ Lounge in the Activity Centre where our monthly meetings take place on the second Monday of each month.

Our next meeting will be on Monday, May 13, at 1:30 p.m. at the Seniors’ Lounge at the Jasper Activity Centre.

All seniors are welcome to attend and see what we are about. You can then decide if membership will be a benefit to you. If you have any ideas or wish to voice any concerns please feel free to email to: [email protected].
