Charges laid after vehicles flee from police twice in one day on Northern Alberta First Nation

Weapons, drugs seized, charges laid after two vehicles attempt to run from police within two hours in north east Alberta.

FROG LAKE - Elk Point RCMP have charged several individuals after two attempted traffic stops on the same day resulted in vehicles trying to evade police.

The first incident took place at about 3 p.m. on Feb. 19 when member of the Elk point Detachment were conducting patrols on the Frog Lake First Nations. RCMP attempted a traffic stop with a stolen vehicle, which then attempted to evade police.

"Elk Point Detachment members with the assistance of Bonnyville Detachment, St. Paul Traffic Services, Police Dog Section, Lakeland Crime Reduction Unit and Eastern Alberta District Crime Reduction unit were able to disable the vehicle and arrest the occupants without incident," according to information from RCMP.

A search of the stolen vehicle took place and police reportedly found a loaded shotgun and small quantity of suspected methamphetamine.

Craig Cardinal, 39, of Lac La Biche, has been charged with, possession of weapon contrary to prohibition order x2, failing to comply with probation order, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and resisting arrest, according to RCMP.

Charity Gadwa, 27, of Kehewin, has been charged with dangerous operation of a conveyance, flight from a peace officer, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, being unlawfully at large and resisting arrest, according to police.

Anna Crane, 36, of Saddle Lake, has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, possession of methamphetamine and resisting arrest, according to RCMP.

Cardinal and Gadwa were taken before a Justice of the Peace and both were remanded into custody. Cardinal and Gadwa are scheduled to appear in court on March 6 in St. Paul.

Crane was taken before a Justice of the Peace and was released on $500 Promise to Pay. Crane is scheduled to appear in court on March 20 in St. Paul.

Second incident in one day

Just two hours later, another traffic stop was attempted when police noticed a vehicle that had been reported stolen. The vehicle tried to flee from Elk Point RCMP and once again charges were laid against a group of individuals, this time the group also included a 16-year-old youth.

The incident took place at about 5 p.m. on Feb. 19. Elk Point RCMP, along with help from the Bonnyville detachment, St. Paul Traffic Services, Police Dog Services, the Lakeland Crime Reduction Unit and Eastern Alberta District Crime Reduction unit "were able to disable the vehicle and arrest the occupants without incident."

When searching the vehicle, police say they found a shotgun and other weapons. 

Trevor Moyah, 27, of Frog Lake, has been charged with operating a conveyance while prohibited x4, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from a peace officer, possession of a firearm contrary to prohibition order x2, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, failing to comply with release order x2, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 x2.

Kayla Moocheweines, 31, of Frog Lake, Alberta was charged with possession of a weapons for dangerous purpose, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and failing to comply with release order x4.

Tyson Moyah, 19, of Frog Lake, was charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, possession of weapon for dangerous purpose, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, and failing to comply with release order x3.

A 16-year-old male from Frog Lake was charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, possession of weapon for dangerous purpose, unauthorized possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, according to RCMP.

Trevor Moyah, Tyson Moyah and Moocheweines were taken before a Justice of the Peace and were remanded into custody. They are scheduled to appear in court on March 6 in St. Paul.

"The 16-year-old male was brought before a Justice of the Peace and was released on a court order," according to RCMP. The youth is scheduled to appear in court on March 13, in St. Paul.
