The Last Word
From the new guy Print

It was about 20 years ago that I first encountered Jasper. Back then I was a tourist enjoying one of my first exciting excursions through Northern Alberta and British Columbia. Engraved in my mind is the indelible memory of riding the Jasper Tramway. I remember being in awe of the breathtaking scenery. I vividly remember the mountains, the river, and the unique configuration of the town-site.

A Few final words Print

Before I spill the things

I mean to hide away

or gouge my eyes with platitudes of sentiment,

I’ll drown the urge for permanence and certainty,

crouch down and scrawl my

name with yours in wet cement.

Natural beauty right under our noses Print

Like most people, a big part of what attracted me to Jasper was the natural beauty of this place. Exploring the rugged mountains, the crystal-clear lakes, and the vast forests is an awe-inspiring experience.

Personally, I prefer the mountains in the winter but in the past few weeks it has been nice to see the variety of wildflowers blooming in the valley and up in alpine meadows. While hiking along any of Jasper’s trails, you can’t help but notice the splash of colour they add to the landscape.

Parks interpreter produces rare kayak video Print

An exhilarating route known as “Excalibur” follows the outflow of Medicine Lake and enjoys an almost mythical status in the kayaking community, as it so rarely exists.

Drive safely and use common sense Print

In the past, I’ve used this space to complain about cyclists who don’t respect the rules of the road. Today, I’m going to use it to complain about motorists both in town and on Jasper’s surrounding highways, because boy are they crazy.

There are people who drive the wrong way down Patricia Street, or even Connaught Drive (I’ve seen both of those things happen in the not-so-distant past), people who stop where there isn’t a stop sign, people who run clearly marked stop signs and then there are the people who ignore pedestrians and cyclists.

The confused case of refugee health benefits Print
ROBSON FLETCHER, EDITOR
July 05, 2012

It was fitting that the federal government backtracked – at least partially – on its plan to revoke certain health-care benefits from refugees on the Friday before Canada Day. The initial plan was mean-spirited, unjustified and profoundly un-Canadian.

Citizenship and Immigration Minister Jason Kenney first announced the changes in April, saying the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) was in need of reform.
