Jasper’s new cross country ski club is ready to teach the community just how it’s done.

Starting on Saturday (Feb. 6), the group will be taking two groups out – one for skate skiing and another for classic skiing.

The club will be teaching skate skiing and classic skiing on Saturday (Feb. 6) at 10 a.m. and Wednesday (Feb. 10) at 5 p.m. A progression class will be held the following week on Saturday (Feb. 13) at 10 a.m. and Thursday (Feb. 18) at 5 p.m. All classes will start from the Pyramid Lake Fire road car park.

For the younger Jasperites, aged 6 to 10, an introduction to next year’s jackrabbit program will be run at Centennial Park on Tuesday (Feb. 16) at 4 p.m. There will be a follow up lesson on Friday (Feb. 26) from 2 to 4.  According to Dave MacDowell, president of the club, these will simply be an brief introduction so that parents, and children can see what next years full program will be like. “Just to show what it could be all about,” he said. A final wrap up party will be held at Maligne Lake and children will have the opportunity to ski the Moose Lake loop.

The lessons are free to all members, or people can pay $10 per class (which is also the same cost as being a member). Rentals can be found at any of the ski shops in town, where memberships can also be purchased. Anyone looking for rentals for children should contact MacDowell at 780-852-5304 or 780-852-5934.
