Competition climbing clears hurdle toward Olympics Print

photo402.jpg After athletes from around the world displayed their talents in pursuit of medals at the Vancouver Winter Olympics, the sport of climbing gained a prerequisite step on the ladder toward becoming an Olympic sport at future summer games last week when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) membership officially recognized the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) as the governing body for the sport.

Marathon skier still gliding at 76 Print

photo390.jpg At 76, marathon cross-country skier, Fred Wall, is still representing Jasper.

Wall competed in the 55-kilometre Canadian Birkebeiner Ski Festival in Edmonton on Feb. 13, a race in which the competitors must race with a 5.5 kilogram pack on their back.

This modest man is very enthusiastic about marathon skiing. He says that it’s all about the wax.

Heil’s Jasper connection Print

photo381.jpg Jennifer Heil, who won the silver medal in woman’s moguls at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics on Saturday (Feb. 13), frequently skied at Marmot Basin when she was a child, said local freestyle moguls coach Chris Peel.

“She was definitely talented. We could all tell that she was destined to be something,” said Peel.

Her medal-winning performance has become a point of pride for many Jasperites, who remember watching Heil grow up skiing at Marmot Basin.

Jasperite records fastest time at Junior Olympics Print

photo400.jpg The Jasper Junior Olympics saw a local girl take gold on Saturday (Feb. 27) at Marmot Basin in the biggest race in North America.

Jacquelyn Proc took gold in the ten year old girls category. She finished with the fastest overall time of any competitor with a time of 42:82.

“I felt really good because my first time, the person beat me by like two milliseconds, so I was really trying to do a little better,” said Proc.

Biggest ski race of the year set to hit Marmot Basin Print

The next event to come flying out of the gates in Jasper is a big one: the Jasper Junior Olympics, the biggest alpine skiing youth event in the country.

Known as being the best organized race of the year and put on by a collaboration of members from different ski clubs throughout the north zone of Alberta, the event will host close to 400 skiers this weekend at Marmot Basin.

Women’s olympic hockey team teach Midget boys a lesson

As Olympic hockey fans sat in their seats enjoying the skillful play of the women’s Olympic hockey team two weeks ago, some Jasper hockey players were enjoying a different experience.

Several residents got the chance to play with, and against, the best women hockey players in the country.
