On Sunday evening, April 28, Ross Pugh slid his key into the door lock one last time, and secured the building that housed his family’s business for 70 years.
Jasper Camera and Gift has been in Pugh’s family for three generations; he took it over from his dad, Jack, 22 years ago.

Parks Canada’s fire management team has waited six years for the perfect burning conditions to ignite a prescribed fire at Vine Creek, on the slopes of Mount Greenock.
And although there’s no guarantee that wait won’t continue, Kim Weir, the agency’s fire communications officer, said she has a feeling this is the year for the Vine Creek burn.

Mayor Richard Ireland was recognized with a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal during the annual Volunteer Banquet, April 25.
He was among 1,000 mayors across the country nominated by the Canadian Federation of Municipalities to receive the award. The commemorative medal is given to Canadians who have made significant contributions to their communities.

Jasper’s assessment values have remained stagnant for the past few years and are only increasing by about one per cent this year.
“A stable assessment base indicates that you’ll see slight increases, but not major increases,” Alice Lettner, director of finance for the municipality, said at the assessment open house on April 26.

The spotlight shone bright on Jasper’s volunteers last week, as they gathered together for the annual Volunteer Banquet.
The event recognizes members of municipal committees and boards, as well as community members who have been nominated and selected for the mayor’s awards. This year, there were no nominations.

Driving for wildlife
While not frequently seen near the roads in Jasper National Park, caribou will descend to the valley in the spring to feed on fresh growth, or in some cases to protect themselves. The female caribou in the photo below was chased by wolves, and narrowly managed to escape by taking refuge in the river above the Astoria Dam near Highway 93A. She remained in the river for more than 12 hours to avoid the wolves that had pursued her; hopefully she made it back up the mountain safely afterwards.

The vacancy rate is at zero per cent and, according to Nancy Taylor of Royal Lepage, that’s nothing new.
