Welcome home, chief

With numb hands, a tanned face and stiff muscles,  fire chief Greg Van Tighem rolled into Jasper Wednesday afternoon, followed by about 40 other bikers and a few emergency vehicles.

Van Tighem was returning from his 23-day, 2,700-km solo bike ride to raise funds and awareness for multiple sclerosis. He started his journey in Wickenburg, Ariz. at the far end of Highway 93 and finished at home in Jasper.

When he arrived at 4 p.m.—right on schedule—he was escorted into town by Jasperites on bikes and motorcycles and he was cheered on by community members who lined the streets.

“I didn't expect this,” he said as he pedalled down Connaught Drive with his entourage. “I knew they'd do something, but I didn't expect this.”

Nor did he expect to pass the Jasper Brewing Company without stopping for a pint of the special Mile Zero IPA, brewed just for his return. “I'm thirsty,” he said while swerving toward the pub with a grin on his face.

But despite the call to quench his thirst, the chief kept on riding, following his escort vehicle to the Mile Zero rock at the corner of Connaught Drive and Hazel Avenue, where he was greeted by about 200 cheering fans.

After many hugs and a few speeches, Van Tighem was off to the pub, where he had his fair share of IPA.

“It's the best IPA on 93. Hands down,” he said.

photo940.jpgIt was an amazing weekend for celebrity sightings in Jasper, as Shania Twain, Annie Lennox, Reba and Cher were all in town to celebrate the fourth annual Jasper Pride Weekend.

OK. You caught us. They weren’t actually here. But, Edmonton’s Guys in Disguise did do some incredibly entertaining impersonations of said icons during Saturday night’s Fairy Tales and Legends party at the Activity Centre.

As the Jasper Brewing Company’s brew master, half the job is taste testing to ensure the best possible batch.

Jasperites living with cancer face numerous challenges beyond their diagnosis.

Doctors appointments and radiation treatments are four hours away in Edmonton and they’re often spread out, forcing a person to drive to the city once a week or once every two weeks. Those trips add up financially, with the cost of gas, hotel rooms and food.

When Ghost Glacier released its grip on Mount Edith Cavell last August, more than 100,000 cubic metres of ice smashed into Cavell Tarn, creating a wave and air blast that destroyed the parking lot, picnic area and lower Path of the Glacier trail.

Fortunately, the massive ice avalanche happened in the early morning hours while Jasperites and visitors were still safely tucked in their beds.

Fireguard burning for Vine Creek

Good conditions and cooperating weather may soon allow the fire management team in Jasper National Park to carry out further fireguard work at Vine Creek. As long as good burning conditions continue, crews will ignite small, well contained fireguard burns in this area, which will augment the extensive fireguard work completed over the past six years. This will help prepare for the planned ignition of 725 hectares at Vine Creek, located 20 km north of Jasper on the slopes of Mount Greenock.

In response to a 240 per cent fee increase to $16,822 to rent the Activity Centre for this year’s rodeo, the Jasper Heritage Rodeo Association is proposing a $10,000 contract to rent the facility instead.

“We knew that the increase was coming, and so we tried to figure out what we thought was fair and what was financially achievable for our organization,” said treasurer Gail Lonsberry, who presented the proposal to council.

Taste of the Town postponed indefinitely

For many years, the iconic Taste of the Town has been the key fundraiser for the Jasper Yellowhead Museum and Archives’ operating budget. Unfortunately in the past few years it has become increasingly difficult for local restaurants and hotels to participate during the Jasper in January schedule as it is already such a busy time. So, last year the popular event changed its date, separating itself from the festival.

Roof fund nearly halfway there

Museum volunteers went door to door and blitzed the town to garner donations for its ailing roof last month and to date $32,370 has been raised.

The high school’s sustainability class is heading to Slave Lake this month in search of the community’s youth voice.

From April 18-21, six Jasper students will be interviewing their peers, as well as Slave Lake teachers, fire fighters, reporters and developers about the redevelopment of the community in the aftermath of its devastating 2011 fire. Each of those interviews will be recorded to later be turned into a 10-minute documentary that the community can use and learn from.
