The Jasper Seniors Society started in July of 1976 when federal funding was given to assist seniors’ groups to get started all over Canada. New Horizons was the name given for this impetus.

The Jasper Seniors Society was registered as a provincial society on May 12th, 1980, with the main objectives being to promote the interests of seniors in the community and to maintain a Seniors’ Lounge.

One of the most ambitious initiatives of Jasper Seniors Society was to operate a transportation service for seniors and the physically challenged. The need for this service was identified and a bus was purchased in October 1991.

This bus was operated by the Society until July 2019, when the Evergreens Foundation agreed to operate the bus.

The Seniors Society recently advocated to the Town Council who agreed to issue free Jasper Activity and Aquatic Centre Passes for all seniors in the community 75 years or older.

JSS has ongoing participation at Community Conversations which keeps us in touch with local and regional services for seniors and provides us with an opportunity to explore new initiatives and possibly address issues which affect all seniors in the community as we feel that “reaching out” into the community is important.

Throughout the years there have been many activities promoted by the Society including Spring and Fall Dinners plus summer outings as well as the enjoyment of activities in Seniors’ Week in June.

It was decided at or April meeting that our Society make a generous contribution to the Alpine Summit Seniors Lodge for the purchase of portable air conditioning units for any rooms currently without air conditioning.  This is a vulnerable sector of our community and your executive felt this was a much-needed donation.  We wish to thank Ornesto Tassoni for his help in effecting and placing these units in the Lodge in May.

Our society members will be venturing out to Maligne Lake on June 4 for a complimentary Boat Cruise courtesy of Pursuit.  We are also very grateful to Sun Dog Tour Company who will be giving us free return transportation on their passenger bus.  Space is limited for this exciting outing so we need an RSVP by May 15, please, by emailing [email protected].   There will be space for four wheelchairs on the boat.

More details will follow in our weekly newsletters. There will be minimal cost for this trip.

What a wonderful way to start out the summer and celebrate Seniors’ Week in Jasper!

Our society works for the benefit of all Jasper seniors with monthly meetings except for July and August.

Please consider joining us at our meetings and see if membership could benefit you too.

If you are interested in becoming a member or just want more information about our group, then please contact us by email at [email protected].
