A criminal trial is currently underway in Calgary. Meredith Borowlec is accused of putting her newborn baby in a garbage bag and dumping the child into a dumpster on October 2010. While the child was saved and is now in good health, it is suspected that this may have been the third time Borowlec has done this. She is charged with two counts of second-degree murder.

Parks Canada has quite a pickle on their hands. There are three elements in their mandate: protection, education and visitor experience. These elements, for the most part, complement each other, but in the case of the proposed backcountry caribou habitat closures, two of the elements are at complete odds. Meanwhile backcountry users and visitors, some of whom have enjoyed the majestic beauty of our mountain parks for decades, are frustrated by the loss.

Facing consequences Print

Recently in Jasper Provincial Court a young woman from Edmonton attempted to defend herself on several charges stemming from an incident that occurred last year on Highway 16. Court testimony revealed that the woman was driving toward Jasper at over 140 kilometres per hour and slammed into the back of another vehicle with children onboard. She then abruptly performed a U-turn and, with her front bumper dragging on the highway, raced away in the other direction until a local sheriff caught up and pulled her over. In her vehicle was her boyfriend and young son.

Another proud Canadian historical moment unfolded in space this week. Chris Hadfield became the first Canadian commander of the International Space Station (ISS).

“When things are going well, it’s easy to be in charge,” Hadfield told students in his hometown of Milton, Ont., earlier this year, via videolink. Last month, Hadfield informed University of Waterloo students, again via videolink from the ISS last month, that he had been training to command the space station since he was 14 years old.

Paolino Pietro Caputo of McBride, Rebecca Lerch of Valemount and Brianna Bossio of Jasper have joined the academic elite, having received the most prestigious distinction of Canadian high school students, the Bronze Governor General’s Academic Award. This is a notable achievement worthy of both respect and recognition. Their achievement will do much to help them when they attempt to enter the modern labour market. However, not everyone can achieve their level of distinction and competition in the labour market is particularly daunting.

Many Canadians will recall with great pride when in 1981 the Shuttle Remote Manipulator System or Canadarm was deployed for the first time onboard space shuttle Columbia. Emblazoned on the arm, for all the world to see, was “Canada” and our flag.  It was a very proud achievement.
