It was another disappointing result for the Jasper Wolves as they lost in a shoot-out to Drayton Valley at home.
“We got the right players, we got the right effort we just have to get the monkey off our back,” said Wolves forward Rob Olson, who remains optimistic about the season.
Despite being one goal down at the top of the second, the Jasperites fought hard to take a two goal lead by the end of the period, taking a 4 – 2 lead.
The team managed to capitalize on power plays and even managed what looked like a perfectly practised tic-tac-toe play from Kent Paterson and Jamie Black to Rob Olson.
But, as history seems to tell, the Wolves just couldn’t keep their lead. It took Drayton Valley most of the period to tie it up, as the Wolves led until the six minute mark of the game.
Jasper stayed out of the penalty box, but they didn’t get another goal in the period. Instead, the Wildcats managed to scrape one by the Jasper goaltender with just six minutes to go.
According to Olson, as the team’s not used to having a lead, they might have got a little nervous and changed their game play.
“Everyone gets a little bit nervous and they start playing defensive... and by playing defensive you get away from what got us that lead in the first place which is being aggressive and offence,” he said.
With a tie on the board, the two teams went into battle with four players each and Jasper’s goalie Cameron Vos continued to play a tight game.
Then came time for the shoot out. Despite having stopped 37 shots on goal throughout the game, Vos couldn’t manage to stop the Wildcats from scoring three more times.
Even though, Jasper’s Daylen Yurkiw managed to sneak a goal in Jasper lost in the shoot-out 4-2.
The team plays again at home this Sunday at 2:45 p.m. |
