Jasper’s Terry Fox run has some new talent at the helm, to put together the nation-wide running event that celebrates one of Canada’s most beloved heroes.
Kim Cameron has taken over the reins and is looking forward to making this year’s event a success.
“I am very excited to get the community involved and excited for this event,” Cameron said.
This year the race is undergoing a change in location in an effort to provide an opportunity for all running abilities to attend. The Discovery Trail location is not suitable for wheelchairs due to the varying terrain, so Cameron said they are providing three different routes for all users.
“The routes are of varying lengths in an effort to get more people out, no matter what their fitness level,” she said.
The run will be held on Sept. 18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. at Centennial Park.
This year is bittersweet for long-time Terry Fox runners. Terry’s mother Betty passed away earlier this year. Cameron hopes the runners will turn out to show their support for the family who have raised countless dollars for cancer research and support.
“With the passing of Betty Fox, all I can hope is that our community becomes more involved and even more supportive of the run,” Cameron said. “Without Betty, the run wouldn’t be what it has become and we need to continue on, for Terry and now for Betty as well.”
Cameron urges Jasperites to participate and support the ongoing battle faced by many Canadians.
“The fight to end cancer should never stop,” she said. “Cancer is such a devastating disease, which has affected my life in many ways, and to know that we continue to run for a cure is the only way we can ever get beyond such a tragic fate.”
From every dollar donated to the Terry Fox Run, 85 cents goes to cancer research in Canada, Cameron said. She has been canvassing local businesses to gather support, and hopes to send each runner home with a small token of appreciation for putting in the kilometres on their running shoes.
Volunteers are needed for run day, to help set up and take down the route, and run registration. Anyone interested can contact Cameron at terryfoxjasper@live.ca |
